AstaReal are pioneers in microalgae cultivation. In the early 1990s, we developed a highly advanced and one-of-a-kind technology using specially designed photobioreactors to cultivate the microalgae Haematococcus pluviailis (HP).
The cultivation process starts in the laboratory, where a seed culture is cultivated under sterile conditions to provide a pure culture. The culture is enriched with essential nutrients and light that allows for optimal growth and proliferation (green phase). When the culture reaches its optimal density in the green phase, it is transferred to our unique stainless steel photobioreactors where the production of astaxanthin (red phase) is initiated. After the algae have reached maturity, they are harvested, crushed and dried. The final biomass is a deep-red powder of high purity, containing a high concentration of astaxanthin. The biomass can be further refined to produce a range of bulk products that are suitable for different formats and formulations.
Our photobioreactors have been individually crafted and specifically designed to allow for optimal maturation of the cells. Thanks to this unrivaled technology, we are able to ensure hygienic conditions and an environment that allows the culture to reach unsurpassed levels of maturity. The result is superior natural astaxanthin products with the highest quality, stability and concentration available in the market.
Our success is attributed to our dedication and passion to provide products that bring health and well-being to people around the world. Our advanced technology, high level of expertise and extensive experience in the production of microalgae enables us to produce natural astaxanthin products that exceed markets standards.
Our first indoor production facility was established in Gustavsberg, Sweden, where we became the first company in the world to commercially produce natural astaxanthin from microalgae in the early 1990s. The facility is ISO, HACCP certified, and our production is both Halal and Kosher certified.
Our commitment to ensuring the supply of superior natural astaxanthin products is further underpinned by the opening of a new manufacturing facility in 2014. Our newest facility is located in Moses Lake Washington, USA, and uses the same innovative photobioreactor system developed in Sweden. As a result, the AstaReal Group´s production capacity has tripled, allowing us to consistently meet the ever-increasing global demand for superior, natural astaxanthin.
The AstaReal Group together with their parent company Fuji Chemical Industries Co., Ltd. are world leaders in research based natural astaxanthin health products. The Group continues to lead the way in the production and innovation of natural astaxanthin.
There are over 400 peer-reviewed studies on astaxanthin. AstaReal® has been featured in the vast majority of these studies. The clinical database for AstaReal® contains over 50 human studies, including 23 double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, with more than 1,400 participants undergoing treatments lasting from 2 weeks to 6 months. The doses used in these trials ranged from 2 to 45 mg/day. The trials were designed to determine the efficacy, safety, and tolerance of AstaReal® astaxanthin for different doses, treatment periods, study designs, and demographic variables including age, gender, and ethnicity. All studies revealed no adverse effects based on hematological findings, serum chemistry, urinal analysis, and self-report questionnaires.
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted in Japan in 2010, 15 healthy adults took 45 mg/day of AstaReal® astaxanthin for 4 weeks, which was over 7-fold the suggested dose of 4 mg/day. The study revealed no adverse effects for all standard examination parameters, including intraocular pressure (Kajita et al., 2010).
AstaReal® is ISO, HACCP, Halal and Kosher certified.
