Kinesiology professor and nutrition researcher Hunter Waldman writes in a new article in Sports Illustrated how astaxanthin supports endurance, recovery, and long-term resilience.
“Astaxanthin isn’t just another antioxidant – it offers a unique edge not found in other supplements. It integrates into cell membranes and mitochondria, acting as a first line of defense against lipid peroxidation, especially under high-stress conditions like endurance training or competition,” Waldman writes.
By underscoring its molecular integration, Waldman points out that astaxanthin’s role goes beyond generic antioxidant protection. Its positioning within vital structures allows it to act exactly where stress and damage typically arise, giving athletes and active individuals an edge in both recovery and long-term resilience.
“In short, astaxanthin isn’t just ‘health insurance’ – it’s a performance-enhancing asset. It works at the molecular level to keep your metabolism agile, your cardiovascular system resilient, and your inflammatory responses tightly regulated”, writes Waldman.
