Delivering quality in every batch – How AstaReal ensures premium natural astaxanthin

Behind every gram of AstaReal AB’s natural astaxanthin is a production process based on quality control – from the first milliliter of algae culture to the final product that is delivered to customers all over the world.

“What sets us apart is both what we produce and how we produce it. The most important part is protecting purity and ensuring traceability, so that we can stand behind everything that leaves our production facility”, says Kurt Haglund, Head of Quality at AstaReal AB.

The production process of the original natural astaxanthin by AstaReal AB begins with a small algae culture that is carefully scaled up in closely controlled phases until it fills one of the massive 32-cubic-meter tanks. Each tank is treated as a separate batch, with parameters like temperature, light, and nutrient supply constantly monitored to prevent deviations and contamination.

“We’re one of the few companies that produce natural astaxanthin that contains such a high antioxidant concentration. That only works if you can guarantee a clean, stable process from start to finish.”

Each batch is fully traceable

Once the algae reach optimal density, the downstream process begins – harvesting, cell disruption, heat treatment and spray drying to produce the final algal meal.

But before a batch is allowed to leave the factory, it undergoes thorough testing. AstaReal AB’s own lab in Uppsala performs quality control analyses, and hygienic purity is analyzed by an external accredited laboratory. A batch can be released from the facility only after passing all these tests.

“Each batch has its own ID, tracking, and testing history. Our release function is unique in the industry. A product doesn’t leave the building until every test is greenlit. That way, both we and our customers can be sure that every shipment is of the highest quality.

Industry-leading purity

The result of this carefully controlled process is a premium quality product. AstaReal AB consistently reaches an astaxanthin concentration of 5 percent in the biomass, which is one of the highest on the global market.

“The purity is both a product of the algae itself and of the quality control and consistency that we have developed over the years.”

In 2021, AstaReal AB passed a high-level food safety system audit, which verifies that the company’s operations meet international requirements for quality, food safety, hygiene, and documentation. This is one of several certifications that the company holds.

As AstaReal AB continues to scale up operations to meet the growing global demand for natural astaxanthin, the main priority is always the quality.

“Our growth isn’t just about volume. It’s first and foremost about scaling the right way, without ever compromising on quality standards”, says Kurt Haglund.
